Guide

How to use a menstrual cup.

A little awkward the first few times, second nature after a cycle or two. Here's everything you need to know – from the first boil until you forget you're on your period.

Step by step

Eight steps. That's all.

Read through before your first time, or jump straight to the step you're wondering about.

Menstrual cup being boiled in a pot of water before first use

Boil the cup

Boil the cup for 5–10 minutes in clean water before first use, and between each period.

Wash your hands with soap before inserting the menstrual cup

Wash your hands

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before inserting the cup.

How to fold a menstrual cup

Fold the cup

Hold the cup by the rim, pinch it flat and fold it in on itself.

There are several folds – try a few and find the one that's easiest for you.

How a menstrual cup should sit

Insert the cup

Insert the folded cup and feel it pop open. It's sitting right when you can't feel it.

Remember your first time with a tampon? It takes about the same amount of practice.

Taking it out – safely

The key: break the seal first. The cup can't get lost – but stress makes it harder.

Break the seal by squeezing the base of the menstrual cup

Break the seal

Gently squeeze the base of the cup to release the suction. Relax and use the same muscles as when you bear down on the toilet.

The cup can't get lost. Take a break, walk around a bit and try again.

Empty the menstrual cup into the toilet

Empty the cup

Empty the cup when it's full. You can wear it for up to 12 hours.

Rinse the menstrual cup in water after use

Clean the cup

Rinse with cold water first to avoid stains, then with warm. Remember to clear the air holes.

Reinsert – and repeat

What everyone wonders the first time.

Can a menstrual cup leak?

If the cup is sitting right and has fully opened, it won't leak. If it does, it's usually because it hasn't unfolded – take it out and reinsert. A few drops the first few times is completely normal while you're learning.

Can it get lost or stuck?

No. Your cervix stops it. If it's sitting high, use your pelvic floor muscles and bear down gently while squeezing the base to break the seal.

How often do I need to empty it?

The cup can stay in for up to 12 hours. Most people empty it morning and evening, and a little more often on the heaviest days.

Can I pee and poo with the cup in?

Yes. The cup sits in the vagina, not the urethra. Some people feel it shift a little when they go to the toilet – check with a finger that it's still sitting as it should.

Can I exercise, swim and sleep with it?

Yes, all of it. The cup collects the blood inside you, so you can swim without a string and sleep through the night – up to 12 hours.

Do I need Light or Heavy?

Light (Ø 41 mm) suits most people and is best for your first time. Heavy (Ø 45 mm) suits you if you bleed a lot or have given birth vaginally. Not sure? The DUO bundle has both.
