Menstrual cup questions
Are menstrual cups safe?
Yes. The Flove menstrual cup is made of 100% medical-grade silicone (Dow Corning QP1) and tested for cytotoxicity by SGS and for bioburden by ALS/QIMA. It contains no lead, bleach or additives.
What's the difference between a menstrual cup and a tampon?
A tampon absorbs, a menstrual cup collects. The cup doesn't disturb your body's natural moisture, and because the blood isn't exposed to air, there's no odour. A test by Norwegian newspaper VG in October 2025 found lead in all 146 tampon products sold in Norway. The Flove menstrual cup is tested free of lead.
What size menstrual cup do I need?
Light (41 mm) fits most people and is best for your first cup. Heavy (45 mm) suits you if you have a heavy flow or have given birth vaginally. It's a guide – no two bodies are alike. Not sure? The DUO bundle has both.
How long can I leave a menstrual cup in?
Up to 12 hours. Most people empty it morning and evening. On your heaviest days you may need to empty it more often.
Can I sleep, work out and swim with a menstrual cup?
Yes, all three. The cup stays in place with a light seal and holds just as well whether you're lying down, running or swimming.
Do menstrual cups leak?
A cup that sits right doesn't leak. Leaks are usually down to the wrong size, or the cup not opening fully after you insert it. Wear Flove period underwear as backup while you're learning.
How do I clean my menstrual cup?
Rinse in cold water, then warm, every time you empty it. Boil it for 5–10 minutes before first use and between periods. Clean the small air holes near the rim.
How long does a menstrual cup last?
Several years with proper care. Replace it when the silicone turns sticky, cracked or discoloured.
How much does a menstrual cup cost?
The Flove menstrual cup costs NOK 379, and the DUO bundle with both sizes NOK 549. Since one cup replaces hundreds of tampons and lasts for years, it pays for itself within the first year for most people. And with our 90-day (f)love guarantee, you get your money back if it doesn't work for you.
